Bikers as a political powerhouse in NC
Raleigh NC May 1, 2008 (AMP)
With only 5 days until the primary elections in North Carolina, Bikers USA and B.O.L.T. of NC announces that their analysis of the NC candidates is #1 ranked in Google for a search of NC PRIMARY CANDIDATES ENDORSEMENT. This has safety nazis who forced a helmet onto our heads sweating bullets, just like we sweat under those hot helmets in the Carolina summer. Our answer to them? They can all go suck eggs.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT ATTORNEY HUPY DONATES $5000 TO BIKER RIGHTS!

Please Help the nationally important helmet injunction case in California.

The California Helmet Law Battle needed money. Hupy to the rescue - AGAIN!

Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo, who is well-known in the biker rights community, as the founder of BIKERS OF LESSER TOLERANCE (B.O.L.T.) and a member of Wisconsin  works for Attorney Hupy, so when the Richard Quigley et al injunction case was proceeding nicely and needed to raise some money lickety-split, Attorney Hupy stepped up to the plate with $5000. BIKERS USA THANKS ATTORNEY HUPY for his generous support.
We still need more money. Unlike the Republic of California Attorney General, all our funding is coming from private donations and organizations. BIKERS USA urges attorneys and other professionals to also please help out.

ADVISORY: HEAT STRESS and MOTORCYCLE HELMETS
“...burden on society...hyperthermic brain injury is the third largest killer in the World”

Advisory by the publisher of BIKERS USA, Raleigh NC April 29, 2007
Heat stress is a buildup of body heat generated either internally by muscle use or externally by the environment. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke result when the body is overwhelmed by heat . As the heat increases, body temperature and the heart rate rise painlessly. An increase in body temperature of two degrees Fahrenheit can affect mental functioning. A five degree Fahrenheit increase can result in serious illness or death. During hot weather, heat illness may be an underlying cause of other types of injuries, such as heart attacks, falls and equipment accidents.
The most serious heat related illness is heat stroke. The symptoms are confusion, irrational behavior, convulsions, coma, and death. While over 20% of heat stroke victims die regardless of health or age, children seem to be more susceptible to heat strain than adults. In some cases, the side effects of heat stroke are heat sensitivity and varying degrees of brain and kidney damage. CDC Source:
In terms of clinical burden on the society and number of deaths occurring due to heat illness, hyperthermic brain injury is the third largest killer in the World after the cardiovascular and traumatic insults to the central nervous system (CNS). In spite of the seriousness of this problem, studies regarding effects of heat on the CNS are largely ignored. Source: Indian Journal of Medical Research, May 2005, H.S. Sharma, University Hospital, Uppsala University, Sweden.

BIKERS USA has not yet been able to find a reputable, published study related to Heat Stress and Motorcycle Helmets but suggests that you think twice before putting that helmet on you and children in hot weather. You know to never lock your children or pets in locked cars with windows rolled up. Similarly, helmets prevent heat from dissipating. The reduced heat dissipation caused by helmets is especially felt while at a stop and in slow moving traffic.

Update 5/1/07 - Email to CDC: I have searched the CDC site and have found very good articles about HEAT STRESS. However, I cannot find any reference to HEAT STRESS and MOTORCYCLE HELMETS. HEAT STRESS is a very serious danger. It is the experience of many motorcyclists, that helmets increase HEAT STRESS, because the helmets prevent/reduce heat dissipation. In the absence of an advisory by the CDC, we are issuing our own advisory. Please see http://bikersmag.com/documents/heatstress.pdf . Please conduct a study and send comments to the email provided. Thank you.

Good News! SMOKEOUT RALLY IS ON AGAIN!

SAME TIME, SAME PLACE, WITH BEER!
April 17, 2007 BIKERS USA
Salisbury County in Salisbury NC caused the Smokeout Rally plans to be quite a bit “on edge” over the last couple weeks. Some citizens from Salisbury had complained, and the county almost stopped all alcohol at the Salisbury Fairgrounds. Edge, from The Horse Backstreet Choppers, hung in there and rode it through. The long awaited announcement is ALL SYSTEMS GO for the 4th weekend in June, and there will be beer!

URGENT: NASTY Drug Alert -
Super Heroin is Killer !

Bikers USA
There are always occasional myths about hot doses of heroin hitting the streets, but this report may be true. Emergency rooms are reporting that an artificially produced super strong heroin has hit the streets. It is 100 times are strong as morphine. It immediately attacks the central nervous system and users are dropping like flys.

Illegal Immigrants - The editor of Bikers USA has been spammed, almost daily, by one particular group wanting to post events opposed to illegal immigration. One day, I received 52 emails from this group! I suggest that is not any way to influence me to help you.
We are also opposed to illegal immigrants trespassing to work for slave wages to make some fat cats richer.  We are opposed to amnesty and eventual citizenship for people who break our laws by crossing our borders illegally.
However, we are very opposed to bashing and hostilities against these impoverished people.
If you want to bash someone or be hostile toward someone, aim your anger at the government which did almost nothing to secure our borders since 9/11, and aim your hostility toward employers who seek illegal immigrant labor so they don’t have to provide basic benefits and a living wage. 1. Secure the borders. 2. Then, and only then, can you begin enforcement of immigration laws. 3. Make severe penalties for those who hire illegal immigrants, and enforce them. 4. Since English is our national language, save tax dollars by stopping government publication of welfare and food stamp documents in Spanish. Citizenship requires understanding English, so why is it that they ask if anyone needs a Spanish interpreter when taking the citizenship oath?

Seattle Woman on 20,000 mile motorcycle ride
June 16, 2006 Editor of Bikers USA
According to her web site and blog, Robin Mahaffey, age 54, departed Seattle on June 10, 2006, on a voyage that will last about 3 months, returning back to Seattle in October, and will cover 20,000 miles. The latest word is that she has ridden about 900 miles. At this point, little else is known about where she is, what routes she is taking, where she plans to visit.
We do know that if the ride is able to produce some proceeds, she plans to help Habitat for Humanity for New Orleans and Grounds for Health. Like many of us, Robin has seen more than her share of challenges, and heartbreaks, with deaths in the family and problems her son is having. She is hoping to meet with women throughout the country to tell them, if she can do this, they can overcome their own fears and accomplish anything. Bikers USA will continue to attempt contact with anyone who might know her exact route and stops. What kind of accomodations does she have at night? For those of us who would love to take a similar ride but are very short on funds, we’d love to know what the budget is for a 20,000 mile trip? What kind of people is she meeting along the way? Is she getting to see any beautiful scenery? That’s the kind of stuff I want to know, but mostly what I want to know is if she plans on riding anywhere near my town so I can meet her.
So far, the internet, including her own web site and those of her major sponsors really do not tell us very much more than what I’ve already told you, leaving people like you and me who want to know more very disappointed. Have faith. We’ll eventually find out more. As of June 16, 2006, a search on Google for the term - “Robin Mahaffey” Seattle - yields only 53 results. As her adventure of a lifetime continues, we’ll keep an eye on this and find out if the word begins to spread. I suspect it will escalate quickly. This should make it 54!
May the wind be at your back, Robin, and may you find excellent weather, interesting stories to tell, wonderful memories, and may the people you encounter give you as much encouragement as you give to them.

Myrtle Beach Mayor does NOT Amuse Motorcyclists
Mayor comment about being tempted to use his car as a weapon gets Myrtle Beach in trouble again.

Mayor Mark McBride said he wanted to ban explicit T-shirts from sale and from being worn in public, saying his young children shouldn't be exposed to a T-shirt he saw recently being worn on the public street.
"It was very tempting to kind of nudge the guy on the bike [with my car]," McBride said.
Myrtle Beach Mayor is candidate for reelection this year. During a meeting with motorcyclists, McBride still thinks he has a right to nudge a motorcycle with his car.

The makings of a fullblown weeklong motorcycle rally
9/14/2005 Raleigh, NC BIKERS USA
The Ray Price Capital City Bikefest, with a top-notch entertainment lineup the first weekend in October, combined with the AHDRA Eastern Finals at the Rockingham Dragway on the second weekend in October, has all the ingredients to kickstart a major motorcycle rally in North Carolina. Independent biker-friendly places can create great events during the week, and clubs can schedule some awesome rides, but here is the big question:Will mandatory helmet laws keep the crowds away? Raleigh Bikefest

bikercharitieslogo1

Some motorcycle events, particularly in the Gulf Coast area of the USA, may have been effected by Hurricane Katrina. As always, before riding 100 miles, you might want to check with the event organizers to make sure the event is still on. BIKERS will update as we get word of any cancellations.
If you were effected, my heart’s with you. I tried quickly forming a relief fund, Biker Charities, because I cannot in good conscience recommend any agency where the executives are pulling in salaries of $450,000. I will be developing Biker Charities, but it’s going to take a lot of time before it’s recognized as credible. Meanwhile, if you want to give to a charity, check it out first. Some of them are con artists. My general rule about donating is, I don’t donate if any money ends up in the pockets of someone who makes 10 or 20 times as much as I do. Do give blood to the American Red Cross.

SUV in attack mode against Pedestrian or Motorcycle always wins. Lady rider seriously hurt.
Daytona. On Saturday, 3/12, just before 5pm, Rev. Algernon Williams of Daytona, who was driving a 2002 Ford Sport Trac SUV, hit Terri M. Phelps, 27, of Lockport, N.Y. , knocking her to the ground and running her over, then fled the scene in fear of motorcyclists. Terri was very seriously injured and had to be EVAC’d aboard a helicopter to Halifax Medical Center. Prior to this, Williams was driving west on 92 and cut off a motorcyclist, Carol Kufasik of Pennsylvania. It is reported that he also nearly rear-ended another. According to police and witnesses, Williams weaved between lanes at high speeds and drove on the shoulder of the road trying to get around other vehicles on the road. According to Carol’s sister, Wendy Kufasik, who witnessed the incident, Williams was endangering the lives of people driving on the road. According to Williams, there were bikers ahead of him speeding up and slowing down, “playing games”, and he admitted to passing in between them. (Note: This sounds like the Toyota Tundra commercial we all complained about). According to court records, Williams has previously been charged with driving with a suspended/revoked license, running a stop sign, and failure to display a driver's license. At the intersection of  92 and North Amelia, motorcyclists boxed him in. He claims that a group of 10 to 14 angry motorcyclists began kicking his SUV at the intersection, and one or more yelled a racial slur. Reports about hitting Terri differ. One report says he backed up, knocking her down, then ran her over. Another report says he tried going around the bikers, hit the motorcycle she was on, knocking her off, then ran her over. He claims he was trying to get away and Terri jumped out in front of him. There was an ambulance crew at the scene which witnessed the event. After he ran over Terri, he drove off, then showed up at a family fish fry, where he phoned police. Williams wants the kicking of his SUV and use of racial slurs treated as a hate crime. Obviously, motorcyclists would like to stop this kind of multiple acts of reckless driving and do not like the use of the SUV as a weapon against either motorcyclists or pedestrians. When an SUV picks a fight with either a pedestrian or a motorcycle, the 4137 pound SUV always wins. The incident is being investigated to determine who gets charged with what. I called the hospital to find out Terri’s current condition and am awaiting a return call by the head nurse. The last report was that she had been in intensive care and was in serious but stable condition.

This article was pieced together by BIKERS USA on 3/19 from accounts as reported by the Daytona Beach News-Journal and the Orlando Sentinel. The article was written to balance some stories which have shifted the focus to the driver being a reverend rather than a menace. Cutting off a motorcyclist, almost rear-ending another, intentionally driving between bikers, driving on the shoulder, then running over a girl leaving her seriously injured qualifies the use of the term menace.

3/14/05 Daytona Bike Week is over. Deputies on the streets say it was the most well behaved bike week they’ve ever seen. Some of the vehicular fatalities attributed to Bike Week were caused by automobiles hitting pedestrians and motorcyclists. A few fatalities were single vehicle accidents caused by motorcyclists speeding or not driving with caution. A tee shirt vendor was displaying a tee that is hateful towards African Americans. (Personally, I hope Bikers begin boycotting such businesses if we see crap like that in the future. Racial Hatred Sucks.) There was an incident involving a motorist named Rev. Algernon Williams, 34, of Daytona Beach who ran over a biker with his SUV. It should make for an interesting trial, so I won’t report more at this time. (Responsible media sometimes needs to avoid jeopardizing cases by staying away from them.) I had been linking to a Daytona newspaper, but they started doing the old “was not wearing a helmet” reporting, even if there might have been other causes attributed to a fatality. Like a helmet is going to save you in a head-on crash with a semi...Overall, hundreds of thousands of bikers did good at Daytona this year..

Not all news from Florida during bike week was about Bikers. Did you see the article about the Orlando guy who admitted to taking coke but refused to give a urine sample? The cop had medical workers try to force catheter him. (He said it was like being raped). That didn’t work so the cop tasered him with 50,000 volts twice until he submitted. What’s up with that?!?!?!

BIKERS USA and Biker Tee has no ties to organized crime.
3/13/2005 Raleigh, NC
Researchers from York University recently listed a sister site of BIKERS USA, Biker Tee, under the category of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs on their Organized Crime Web Links Page. If it were worth my time, I’d correct them. I’d have to explain, and they wouldn’t understand. For the record, BIKERS USA is owned by independent bikers. Note: One percenters are serious bikers who ride every day. They work, have families, and have a reputation for riding hard and partying hard. The one percent patch does not imply criminal, outlaw motorcycle gangs, or organized crime. It implies dedication to their brotherhood and riding.

Daytona 200 - Great Racing! If you watched the Daytona 200 on Thursday to see Tommy Hayden of Owensboro, KY on a KZ win the Supersport final, and the great job by all the other racers, you saw a spectacular race. This Harley Biker Lady was on the edge of her seat the whole time. It was an exciting race. I bummed out when brother Roger Hayden’s KZ fell apart when racing for third. The fluid caused his rear tire to slip about 4 times on 2 corners when there were only 3 laps to go. In Superstock, Vincent Haskovec, a native of the Czech Republic, did a fine job to win the Superstock. His M4 SUzuki seemed to come from nowhere on the final laps. There is a lot of speculation as to whether or not he got his edge from Perrelli tires since other top contenders all had Dunlop.

Daytona Beach Bike Week is in full swing. 3/9 10:25pm. Approximately 500,000 bikers estimated. Right now, the Steppenwolf concert at the Speedway should be just about ending. Weather outlook for the next few days is an occasional shower, highs in the 70’s during the day. Lows slightly less than 50 at night. Sunday should be sunny. There have been two motorcyclists killed in seperate crashes. One was a biker from Orlando who was killed when a logging truck swung and took up the whole road. In the other accident a motorcyclist ran into the back of another in New Smyrna Beach.

1/1/05 The New Jersey legislature wants to begin imposing mandatory helmet laws for snow skiers now. However, a 29 year study undertaken in Vermont has determined that injuries of helmeted skiers is more severe than injuries of non-helmeted skiers. Researchers attribute the reasons to 1. a sense of invincibility. 2. Helmets don’t do much after 14 mph. They have found those with helmets tend to ski faster and attempt dangerous terrain beyond their abilities. Skiiers are finding out helmets are no panacea at ski resorts.

11/21/04 A bill to close the current health insurance discriminatory loophole has been passed by the United States Senate. This legislation, S.423 Health Care Parity for Legal Transportation, was authored by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI). Harley-Davidsons’ 2005 lineup is sensational. What else is new? (They don’t pay me to say this). Personally, I am in love with the 2005 Harley-Davidson Softail models. They have all the classic vintage styling, yet they are engineered for better performance.

‘tis the season to think about the 2005 motorcycle riding season. Bikers looking for used Harley motorcycles can go to hawg used harley.

Oh Deer. It is that season again, when deer are getting hit by automobiles and motorycles. Always be aware that animals can suddenly appear. (In memory of Mr. Clean, Vietnam veteran, bartender and Outlaws MC prospect, Charlotte, NC who died when a dog ran out in front of him in 1999).
