Times change. Motorcyclists are rapidly increasing in numbers. If you think that even though there are more motorcyclists, and more older motorcyclists, there are fewer old school bikers, you’re probably correct. There is a large batch of new wave bikers, and as they learn respect and lessons from the road, it will be up to them to carry on. For those who like analogies, here is one for you. The cowboys who lived and died by the code of the west rarely ride the plains and struggle for survival as they once did. As times changed, cowboys were mostly found in wild west shows and rodeos. There are many who call themselves cowboys today, but their lives are much different. The same is true for bikers. Beware the people who will try to control us by legislating everything about our motorcycles, our clothing, the tatoos on our skin, our mannerisms and behaviors. As we stand together against them, we may even be accused of anarchy, a term sociologists often associate with subcultures, particularly underground subcultures. It is not about anarchy. It is about trying to preserve our rights and freedom by stopping the complete regulation of every aspect our existence. The power to enforce new gang legislation measures will be tested frequently, and there will be law enforcement who will abuse the power. To combat corrupt and abusive law enforcement practices, good people in law enforcement will be needed. Corporations will continue to discriminate, and are likely to increase refusal to hire tattooed people. Rather than do something about the cage drivers who plow into us, there are new technologies being introduced for motorcyclist safety which the powers to be may try to force upon us. There will be times when you will need to take things personal. There will be times when you will have to stand up for what you believe in, and for your “self” in this Age of Self. The Bikers subculture is changing with the times. Every once in a while, someone please step up and remind us all “It’s not about me”. It’s about all of us. |
