World Speedway Racing Association Rules are basically,

• Tires need regulation steel studs.
• Motorcycle must not be equipped with brakes.
• Motorcycles must be equipped with an automatic dead man’s switch - a kill switch which activates if the rider loses the bike.

Of Historical Interest: The first race organized by I.C.E. was held in 1977 in Oklahoma City, Ok. They expanded to include trike and quad divisions in 1985.

Editors Note: The Lakeside Rats and I used to ride motorcycles on ice in the 60’s. It was great if the lake had a crusty snow cover, but glaring ice and tires without studs can be a real b!tch!

More About Ice Racing and Speedway Racing:

For those of you who seek even more information about the history of ice racing, some have traced the first recorded event as being in 1925 in Germany. Ice racing continues to be extremely popular in Russia and Scandinavia.

Flat track races were held in North America since the early 1900’s. “Speedway” racing was introduced in New South Wales, Australia by Johnny Hoskins of New Zealand. For those of who want to know more about “speedway racing”, longtrack racing, and ice racing, someone who has done a lot of research into it is Geoff Boxell. Try this google search.
