Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Info. August 6 through August 12, 2007

The Sturgis Rally is sometimes called Sturgis Bike Week, the Black Hills Rally, the Black Hills Classic, and sometimes it is just called Sturgis. It was started in 1938 by the Jack Pine Gypsies MC, who received received an AMA charter in 1936 and began making a flat track race track. In it’s 67th years, the 2007 Sturgis Rally will have an estimated attendance of over 500,000 visitors to the town of Sturgis, South Dakota, which has a population of about 9274.

Several Motorcycle Events on the way to Sturgis Rally take place in Montana

The 2006 Sturgis Rally attendance was lower than past years. Motorcycle rally vendors blamed higher gasoline prices, unpopular war, and doubtful economy. Official estimates are about 75,000 people lower.
There could also be the anti-abortion impact in opposition to South Dakota lawmakers, as well as support for the Indians who are trying to save sacred land at Bear Butte Mountain from commercial development. Whether or not this will become a trend continuing into 2008 remains to be seen.

Do you truly love Sturgis and the area? If so please take care of it.
Again in 2008, Bikers USA proudly supports the Bikers for Bear Butte project.

A New Trail of Tears Could Lead to Bear Butte
Sacred Grounds Desecrated at Sturgis

Important Bikers USA Editorial:
With approximately 200,000 riders in Waterloo Alabama, the number of riders who go on the Trail of Tears Ride is quite impressive. Sadly, the number of supporters for Bikers for Bear Butte, pales in comparison. If you care about freedoms, such as religious freedoms, or rights, such as the rights of indigenous people, there is what appears to be an evident hypocrisy that bikers need to be aware of in order to overcome. At the 2006 Sturgis Rally, most bikers saw lots of Indians gathered in protest. They were not there to protest your presence! They were there to ask your support in keeping commercial interests from destroying their sacred grounds. Only a few bikers stopped to talk with them and find out why. Good for those few! One uninformed biker spat at them as he rode past a group. They are not anti-biker.
What you saw at Sturgis was NOT Indians versus Bikers.
It is Indians versus Fatcats bent on further desecrating and ruining their sacred grounds and using your hard-earned money and politics to do it. The Indians RESPECT your heritage and traditions and want to work with you, to let you know how you can RESPECT theirs. Bikers USA calls on riders along the Trail of Tears to please learn of the pending destruction taking place at Bear Butte, and spread the word about supporting Bikers for Bear Butte in 2007.  Bikers for Bear Butte seeks to educate bikers about how to honor requests by tribes, to help them in preserving Bear Butte Mountain, north of Sturgis, as Sacred Grounds, rather than letting them be overrun by commercial interests who build closer and closer every year.

Bikers For Bear Butte
Heading to Sturgis for the Sturgis Rally? Do you love the area? If so, have a great time, but please find out about how to respect and preserve Bear Butte Mountain as sacred Indian grounds. Better yet, join other bikers and the Indians in protecting the mountain from the commercial greed which threatens to overrun the black hills.
Do you want to see porta-potties sitting on Lincolns’ head at Mt. Rushmore? Of course not!
The Indians don’t want to see porta-potties dotting the side of Bear Butte.
Stop rewarding the commercial interests that continue their expansion onto Bear Butte!
Find out who the fatcats are before you head to Sturgis, and don’t give them a penny. Save the Black Hills for future generations.

We Borrow Her From Our Children.”

3 Threatened Boycotts of South Dakota and the Sturgis Rally in 4 Years!
Indians, Bikers, Women and people who care about them. (Written in 2006)
Information about the latest threat of a Sturgis Rally Boycott - Since 2003, South Dakota has survived a tourism boycott called by Indians over poor treatment of sacred Indian grounds, and a tourism boycott called by bikers when they let Rep Janklow off with a lenient 100 day sentence after recklessly killing a motorcyclist. This years boycott of South Dakota is to let women choose, and stop the inevitable back alley coathanger abortions. South Dakota tourism is once again threatened with a boycott. See Sturgis Rally Boycott.

Gathering of Nations To Defend Bear Butte
Stop the desecration of our sacred prayer mountain. Boycott all bars/campgrounds east of Sturgis near Bear Butte, such as Broken Spoke/County Line Campground, Free Spirits (formerly Lone Star)Campground, Full Throttle Saloon, Buffalo Chip, Dragpipe Saloon, Glencoe Campground and others. “Free Spirits Campground” is literally at the base of Bear Butte and was just granted a liquor license! DO NOT CAMP THERE PLEASE! Stand with Native people in solidarity to stop this desecration! For more info, please contact Natalie @ pteole@gwtc.net or(605) 867-5762 or (605) 441-0605. Debra @ (605) 455-2155 or (308) 862-1297.

Desecration of Indian Lands for Just a Week of Fun sounds like perverse fun we can all live without. I urge all bikers to stand with the Indians against the commercial interests on this. The Indian nations do not want to stop Biker traditions in Sturgis. They yearn to continue their own.

Tips for Long Motorcycle Rides:
If at all possible, pack your sleeping bag or bedroll so that it makes for a comfy backrest. Ahhh, just right!
Travel with others who you’ve already verified are good riders.
Check your motorcycle thoroughly in the days before a long ride.
When you’ve been on the road for a few hours, howl in enjoyment whenever you feel like it.
Know your motorcycles fuel milage and plan your fuel stops so that you don’t have to go to reserve. If others are in the pack, check to be sure they are okay with fuel.
Review your hand signals with the rest of the pack before heading out, and make sure there is good signalling from the rear to the front.
Respect signs on outside of any premises regarding weapons and colors. If you’re packing heat, make sure you know and follow the laws of all states you ride through and check to see if they have reciprocal firearm laws with your state. Bring all necessary permits with you. Know where you can lock up your gun before you go hitting any bars.
As always, RESPECT other riders, and have one heck of a nice, safe ride and enjoy!

If you pitch a tent like I usually do: Weirs Beach Campgrounds. Note: Everyone says camping at the Drive-In is best. That is bogus! There is much better camping in the area. Even Gunstock is better, but they want an outrageous 5 night minimum. Definitely, chill out in Weirs Beach on Saturday night. My favorite Hotel is in the little town of Lincoln NH (my exact favorite is secret, sorry). For hotels closest to both the races in Loudon and Weirs Beach, choose Loudon, Concord,or Tilton.  On the way  from NY and CT, stop off at Sturbridge Village on Thursday 6/15. On Sunday 6/18, if you’re heading back to Boston, stop at Hampton Beach and spend Sunday evening in Hampton NH, Seabrook NH, or Salisbury MA.

Sturgis Rally

Campgrounds are definitely the best. IN THE INTEREST OF PRESERVING BEAR BUTTE MOUNTAIN, TRY AND FIND ONE OTHER THAN THE OVERGROWN, OVERLY COMMERCIAL BUFFALO CHIP CAMPGROUND.  For those who want a hotel, if I weren’t staying in Sturgis, I would choose Deadwood.
